Cervical Spondylosis

Cervical spondylosis, also known as cervical osteoarthritis or neck arthritis, refers to age-related degeneration of the cervical spine (neck). It involves changes in the intervertebral discs, vertebrae, and facet joints of the cervical spine.

Causes:

  • Similar to lumbar spondylosis, cervical spondylosis is primarily caused by age-related wear and tear of the cervical spine structures.
  • Other contributing factors may include repetitive neck movements, poor posture, spinal injuries, and genetic predisposition.

Symptoms:

  • Neck pain: Cervical spondylosis often presents with chronic neck pain that may be exacerbated by movements such as bending, twisting, or lifting.
  • Radicular symptoms: Compression of cervical spinal nerves can lead to radiating pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness that travels into the shoulders, arms, or hands.
  • Stiffness: Stiffness and decreased range of motion in the neck are common, particularly after periods of inactivity.
  • Headaches: Some individuals with cervical spondylosis may experience tension headaches or cervicogenic headaches related to muscle tension and nerve irritation in the neck.

Diagnosis:

  • Similar to lumbar spondylosis, diagnosis of cervical spondylosis involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, and imaging tests such as X-rays, MRI scans, or CT scans.
