Cervical & Lumbar Fixation Surgery

Cervical and lumbar fixation surgery, also known as spinal fusion, is a surgical procedure used to stabilize and fuse together adjacent vertebrae in either the cervical (neck) or lumbar (lower back) regions of the spine.

Here’s an overview of the procedure:

Indications: Cervical and lumbar fixation surgery is typically recommended for individuals with instability or abnormal movement between vertebrae, often due to conditions such as degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, spinal fractures, spinal tumors, or spinal deformities.

Preparation: Before the surgery, patients undergo a comprehensive evaluation, including imaging studies (such as MRI, CT scans, or X-rays) to assess the condition of the spine and identify the specific areas requiring stabilization. Patients may also undergo pre-operative tests to evaluate their overall health and fitness for surgery.

Recovery: After the surgery, patients are monitored closely in the recovery room before being transferred to a hospital room or discharged home. Pain management, including medications and physical therapy, is typically provided to help manage post-operative discomfort and facilitate recovery.

Post-operative Care: Patients are instructed to follow specific post-operative guidelines, which may include:

  • Limiting physical activities and avoiding heavy lifting for a period of time.
  • Gradually resuming normal activities under the guidance of healthcare professionals.
  • Attending follow-up appointments to monitor healing, assess fusion progress, and address any concerns.
