Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that allows doctors to view, diagnose, and treat problems inside a joint. It is commonly used for joints such as the knee, shoulder, hip, and ankle.
During arthroscopy, a small, tube-like instrument called an arthroscope is inserted into the joint through a small incision. The arthroscope has a light source and a camera, which enables the surgeon to visualize the interior of the joint on a monitor. This real-time imaging allows the surgeon to assess the extent of damage, identify any abnormalities, and perform necessary surgical procedures.
Arthroscopy is preferred over traditional open surgery in many cases because it is less invasive, resulting in smaller incisions, less tissue damage, and typically a faster recovery time. Patients often experience less pain and have a lower risk of complications compared to open surgery.
While arthroscopy is generally a safe procedure, it is essential to discuss the potential risks and benefits with a healthcare professional. The suitability of arthroscopy depends on the specific joint and the nature of the problem being addressed.
